Our Lodge only exists through the hard work of our members. There are many who are no longer with us, but their memory is kept alive by our continued existence. There have been almost 400 members of the Lodge since it was formed, so it is impossible to list them all here, what follows is a selection of those who have more recently passed to the Grand Lodge above. This is a work in progress, so please bear with us if a name you expect to see is not included. Alternatively, you are welcome to provide a short eulogy similar to those below for inclusion.
We remember:
Bro James William Hambrook 15th July 1936 - 28th March 2024
W Bro Alfed John Collins 4th June 1934 - 26th November 2022
Known to all as John, he was initiated into the Lodge on 17th April 1974. John became WM in 1995 and again in 2014 and whilst he held a number of offices in the Lodge, he was Charity Steward from 2003 to 2007 and Secretary from 2007 to 2011. It was in 2007 that our Secretary WBro Geoff Newton suddenly passed away (see below). Without hesitation it was W Bro John that stepped up to the mark at this very difficult time for the Lodge. He was appointed PPAGDC in 2002, PPSGD in 2009 and PProvGSwdB in 2016. John's health meant that for the last couple of years of his life he was unable to attend meetings. The Brethren therefore elected him an honorary member, perhaps a measure of the high regard in which he was held.
W Bro James (Jim) Stocking 18th April 1923 - 15th February 2020
Jim was initiated into the Lodge in 1964 and became Master in 1974. Jim holds the distiction of being our Lodge's longest serving treasurer. He took up the post in 1976 and remained until 2003, a remarkable 27 Years. He was honoured with his first Provincial appointment, Past Provincial Senior Grand Deacon in 1983 and promoted twice. Firstly to Past Provincial Grand Registrar in 1991, then Past Provincial Junior Grand Warden in 1998.
W Bro Albert Pascal 9th July 1931 - 20th October 2019
Albert was initiated into Freemasonry on 4th July 1962 in the Burstow Lodge No 4376. He joined Saye & Sele Lodge in 1994 and became Master in 2002. Albert's great passion was hospices and together with his wife Doreen he became an early fundraiser for St Christopher's Hospice, which was probably the first in the World. He later became an advanced volunteer for the Demelza Children's hospice. It was for his efforts in community work that he was awarded the Queeen's Award for Voluntary Service in 2012.
W Bro Roger Chapman 8th December 1925 - 14th March 2018
Roger was initiated into the Lodge in March 1961 and was one of the last to be initiated at Saye & Sele's then home of the stables at the Seamen's home in Belvedere. He became Master of the Lodge in 1969 and went on to have a lusterous Masonic career, his achievements being too numerous to mention here. In 1983 Roger was honoured by HRH the Duke of Kent the Most Worshipful Grand Master with the Grand Rank of PAGDC and was later promoted to PJGD and then PSGD.
W Bro John Richard Seguss 15th January 1934 - 25th January 2018
John was initiated into the Lodge on 21st March 1984 and became Master in 2003 and joined the Saye & Sele Chapter in 1996. He was an avid supporter and always willing to help where he could and was also an active member of the Lodge of Instruction. A community minded man, he was also leader of the Erith Sea Scouts. John served as Lodge Almoner from 2005 to 2012.
